SME is pleased to announce a new community website named the SME Community. Featuring new member-friendly content creation tools such as blogs, resource library submissions, ranking, and commenting capabilities, the SME Community will serve the membership in new and exciting ways. Allowing members to freely submit, collaborate, and communicate online will empower governance groups, such as the regional boards, committees and sections, to more effectively work together. Mining Engineering magazine launches a new website
The new Mining Engineering web site (www.miningengineeringmagazine.com) is scheduled to launch on January 1st 2012. The web site has been redesigned from the ground up. Members will able to access the current issue of ME as well as archived issues going back to 2004. In addition, the site will contain mining industry news stories, updated daily, as well as a monthly online-only feature article. This will make Mining Engineering more timely and useful to members.

New from the SME bookshelf
The World of Mining. In this truly unique celebration of mining, breathtaking aerial photographs accompany ground-level pictures of mines, mine-side oddities, and mine communities. Informed but breezy narratives explain the images. This coffee table book shows that mining and associated activities can be impressive, attractive, and even spectacular. Members pay only $80.

Local Section Heroes
SME is pleased to announce a new program called "Local Section Heroes" that recognizes our local section leaders!
At the core of each local section is a group of dedicated volunteers who recruit members, organize section activities, work with local SME student chapters, raise money, provide educational outreach, and more. To recognize our member volunteers for their hard work at the local section level, SME has created the "Local Section Hero" program. Beginning January 2011, a "Local Section Hero" will be profiled each month in Mining Engineering magazine. This column will highlight an individual or a group of individuals who carry out unique and exemplary activity at the local section level.
If you know someone who is providing exemplary service to your local section, please take a few moments to nominate that individual as a Local Section Hero! Local Section Hero Nomination Form

MEET OUR MEMBERS
SME Members are among the most successful professionals in the Minerals' Industry and it all starts here with STUDENTS. Every Fall, SME hosts a Student Membership Challenge. 35 Student Chapters, in the US and around the world, compete against each other to try to recruit the highest number of new SME Student Members. This year’s Student Membership Challenge just ended and the Winners will be announced soon. The top three student chapters that recruit the most number of new members will receive cash rewards. We would like to share with you stories from several Student Members. Here is our first featured Student: Román Gil Rodriguez, Mining Engineer, Universdad Politécnica De Madrid, Madrid, Spain. Member Since 2011, Student Member.
“I discovered SME thanks to their famous publications on mineral processing, tunnels and mining. This is my first year as a member and finally as a student, so far I can only comment on the quality and accuracy of its publications. I hope to discover more aspects of SME for many years.”

SME Announces 2011-2012 Henry Krumb Lecturers!
SME is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Henry Krumb Lecturers! The Henry Krumb Lecture series was established in 1966 so that local SME sections could hear prominent minerals professionals speak on subjects in which they have recognized expertise. Henry Krumb, a 1897 graduate of the Columbia School of Mines, had an interest in engineering education and improving the status of the mining profession. He anonymously established an endowment fund "for any purpose that is for the benefit of the Institute (AIME)." The 2011-2012 Henry Krumb lecturers and their lecture titles can be found here.
