The Mining Engineering Department at the University of Utah provides courses and instruction leading to B.S., M.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mining engineering. Instruction covers all major aspects of mining including coal, metal, and industrial mineral mining by surface and underground methods. The faculty conduct and publish research results in rock mechanics, ground control, slope stability, blasting, ventilation, mineral economics, safety management systems, and systems simulation. The Department has recently founded the Center for Mining Safety and Health Excellence, directed by Tom Hethmon, the Western Mining Presidential Chair in Mine Safety.
