Awarded To: Nancy L. Bingham


"For her enthusiastic and continuing support of GEM activities and for her dedication to producing quality material to educate the public with more information about the minerals industry. With the support of Caterpillar and the SME GEM Committee, the CD “Adventures in Mineral Education” was released in 2004"
Nancy Bingham has spent the majority of her 23-year career at Caterpillar working with the mining industry. Her responsibilities include communications, industry relations and heading up the MINExpo 2004 team. She’ll also be leading Caterpillar’s efforts to support mining sustainable development initiatives. In 1991, Nancy headed up the development of Common Ground – Modern Mining and You, an educational film that has won numerous awards and has been seen by over 8 million people. Nancy is active on committees at the SME, National Mining Association, National Mining Hall of Fame and American Coal Foundation. She was raised in a mining family in the upper peninsula of Michigan – her father was one of the pioneers of mining environmental awareness and reclamation in the 1970s and worked extensively with the SME.

About The GEM Individual Archive Award:

The GEM Award was established in 1978 to recognize outstanding contributions to the SME Government, Education and Mining (GEM) program within the defined scope of GEM activities. The award is made for activities at the Local Section level only. Election to this honor is by the GEM Committee with notification to the SME Executive Committee.
