The 2004 Stefanko Best Paper Award 
Awarded To: Michael A. Berdine
For the paper "Effect of Regional Stresses on a Large Diameter Raise Bored Shaft at RAG’s Twentymile Coal Company” presented at the 2004 SME Annual Meeting, Denver, Colorado
Michael Berdine is Manager of Tech Services for Twentymile Coal Company located in Oak Creek, Colorado. He has a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University. He started his engineering career with Bethlehem Mines in 1980 as a maintenance engineer. He then worked for Beth Energy Mines and Eighty-Four Mining in various positions, including head mining and longwall engineer, longwall-maintenance supervisor, longwall coordinator and director of subsidence mitigation. In 1998 he accepted a position with Twentymile Coal Company as a senior mine engineer.
The Stefanko Best Paper Award, established in 1983, recognizes authors presenting papers in the Coal & Energy Division technical sessions, at SME Annual Meetings, for their contributions to the body of knowledge.
