The 2004 Stefanko Best Paper Award 
Awarded To: Del Brock
For the paper "Effect of Regional Stresses on a Large Diameter Raise Bored Shaft at RAG’s Twentymile Coal Company” presented at the 2004 SME Annual Meeting, Denver, Colorado.
Brock has more than 40 years experience in underground construction. He has been a division manager for Frontier-Kemper Constructors in Evansville, Indiana since 1991. He is responsible for administrative and technical management of underground construction projects as well as the development of new business opportunities.
From 1980 until 1991 he served the company as project manager and was responsible for the construction of several underground projects including a new coal mine at Carmi, Illinois for Mapco Coals; an oil shale mine at Vernal, Utah for White River Shale Oil and repair and construction of aeration slots in the two spillway tunnels at Hoover Dam for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Brock also worked on the construction of the hanging lake tunnels (U.S. Interstate 70), Glenwood Canyon, near Glenwood Springs, CO.
The Stefanko Best Paper Award, established in 1983, recognizes authors presenting papers in the Coal & Energy Division technical sessions, at SME Annual Meetings, for their contributions to the body of knowledge.
