The 2004 Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Young Scientist Award

Awarded To: Ismail Yildirim

"In recognition of scientific professionalism in the industrial minerals industry"
Ismail Yildirim is a process engineer of the technical staff of Imerys at its Research and Technology Centre in Sandersville, GA. He received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech under the supervision of Roe-Hoan Yoon. He graduated in mining engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, where he also received his M.Sc. degree in Mineral and Coal Processing Section. After working as a teaching and research assistant from 1989 to 1997, he came to Virginia Tech to pursue his Ph.D. studies. At Virginia Tech, his research was focused on surface free energy characterization of powdered materials and establishing the correlation between surface free energy and selective flocculation of fine particles.

He made contributions in acid-base interaction theory; interfacial phenomena; basal-edge surface characterization of layer structured minerals; adsorption mechanism of surfactants at the basal and edge surfaces of layer-structured minerals; upgrading of high impurity, ultra-fine kaolin clays; development of novel reagents for flotation and dewatering of coarse and ultra-fine minerals. He has worked as a leader or project member in a number of process and product development projects related to industrial minerals (kaolin, talc, calcium carbonate, flourite, silica, bentonite, boron minerals etc.) both as a researcher (in the university) and process engineer. He has published several technical papers in refereed journals and presented number of technical papers in meetings and conferences.

Yildirim has several U.S. patents pending for his work in the area of kaolin products and processes. He is currently working on various process and product development and process efficiency/improvement projects that are related to hydrous and calcined kaolins. He is a member of the Materials Information Society and SME. He has provided support to Mining Engineering annual review articles as Vice-Chair for Fillers & Pigments on the IndMD Technical Committee.
