The 2004 M&E Outstanding Young Professional Award
Awarded To: Robert W. Pratt
In recognition of meritorious accomplishments in the mining and exploration industry"
Robert W. Pratt, P.E. received a BS degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Arizona in the spring of 1996. Soon after graduating, Mr. Pratt went to work for the Asarco Ray mine near Kearney, AZ. in a temporary position with the geology department. In the summer of 1997, Mr. Pratt accepted another temporary position with the geology department at the Cyprus Sierrita mine near Green Valley, AZ. to assist with a drilling program. Towards the end of the drilling program, in late 1997, Mr. Pratt accepted an offer to work with Call & Nicholas, Inc. on a slope stability project at the Sierrita mine. This allowed him the opportunity to pursue his personal interest in mining and rock mechanics.
Mr. Pratt has been with Call & Nicholas, Inc. ever since, and has enjoyed working on a broad variety of projects within the mining industry including block cave mining projects, industrial minerals, open cut coal mining, and deep open pit slope designs. In his career at Call & Nicholas, Inc., Mr. Pratt has had the opportunity to work on challenging projects, and has contributed to the fields of rock fragmentation for block cave mining, probability based analysis, and coal highwall stability. Some of the more notable projects he has worked on include the Grasberg Open Pit mine and the DOZ block cave mine operated by P.T. Freeport Indonesia, the US Borax Mine in Boron, California, numerous open pit copper mines in Arizona and New Mexico, and coal mines in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.
Pratt has served the Tucson SME chapter as the GEM committee chairman. Through his efforts, the GEM program has been revived leading to new efforts in minerals education in the Tucson area.
The M&E Outstanding Young Professional Award, established in 1996, recognizes the meritorious accomplishments of a young individual working in the mining and exploration industry (including related academic and governmental careers).
