The 2005 Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Young Scientist Award

Awarded To: Michael C. Cheshire

"In recognition of scientific professionalism in the industrial minerals industry"
Cheshire received his B.A. in Geology from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas in December of 2001. As a lab manager for Dr. Necip Guven’s Clay Mineralogy Lab operating X-ray Diffraction and Analytical Electron Microscopes, he performed a variety of clay synthetic reactions. He was a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, an honorary geological society. Upon the completion of his Bachelors, he continued at Texas Tech University, earning an M.S. in Geochemistry in December of 2003. His research developed experimental methods for the hydrothermal alteration of chrysotile asbestos into smectite. This research provided information on the mechanisms and chemistry of the chrysotile to smectite transformations. While working on his M.S. thesis, he continued to work with Dr. Guven and taught several laboratories in Mineralogy, X-ray Diffraction, and Physical Geology. Currently, Cheshire works at Oil-Dri Corporation in Chicago, Illinois as a Research Scientist in the New Product Development Group where he researches and developments new products, mineral-processes, and mineral-applications. He has worked on new products used in the brick industry, vegetable oil processing, and agglomeration processes. He is a member in the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Mine Engineering, Clay Minerals Society, and American Chemical Society. In his spare time, he enjoys riding his bike along the shores of Lake Michigan and volunteering at the Field Museum of Natural History.
