The 2005 M&E Outstanding Young Professional Award

Awarded To: Shaun P. Graber

"In recognition of meritorious accomplishments in the mining and exploration industry"
Shaun P. Graber received a B.S. degree in mining engineering in the spring of 1999 from the University of Arizona. As a member of the SME student chapter, he held offices as President and Treasurer. Shaun was involved with advancing the safety standards and practical experiences that were available at the university’s experimental underground mine. As a student representative with the Tucson section of SME, Mr. Graber worked to bridge the gap between the professional side of SME and future young leaders. Throughout college he had several internships with both open pit and underground metal mines working on mechanical crews, production crews, and in engineering departments. After college, Shaun worked at the Sierrita Mine south of Tucson in a temporary position with the engineering department. In the beginning of 2000, he started a full time position for Asarco’s Tennessee Mines Division, holding positions of underground mining engineer and supervisor at 2 of the mines in the East Tennessee Area. While in Tennessee he helped re-establish the East Tennessee Section of SME, holding the chair position. When the mines went on care and maintenance at the end of 2002, Shaun looked to broaden his scope and accepted a position with Frontier Kemper Constructors, Inc. as a project engineer. Shaun was instrumental in the completion of four shafts and three slopes/decline tunnels throughout Kentucky and helped start the development of a waste water tunnel and multiple service shafts in St. Louis, Missouri. After obtaining a variety of practical experiences, Shaun moved on to advance his technical skills in March of 2004 with McIntosh Engineering, Inc. in Tempe, Arizona. As a mining engineer he specializes in underground hard rock mine design and engineering for major mining companies around the world. Shaun was selected for the SME Young Leaders Committee in 2004. With in Young Leaders Shaun was on the Finance Committee and currently serves as the Marketing Chair. Shaun is involved in various capacities of promoting young professionals of today for the future needs in the mining industry.
