The 2005 MPD Outstanding Young Engineer Award

Awarded To: Samuel A. Rasmussen

"In recognition of significant contributions within the Mineral Processing/Extractive discipline"
I graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1992 with a B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Refining. Upon completion of my degree, I began working for Phelps Dodge Mining Company in Morenci, Arizona. Between 1993 and 2000, I worked in hydrometallurgical operations at Morenci in varying capacities from shift supervisor to operations superintendent. Some notable events during my experiences at Morenci were the start-up of a solution extraction and electrowinning facility and the optimization of intercell bus configuration for electrowinning cells. During this period, I also worked on our Safford project which is currently being developed. In 2000, I was assigned to our Sierrita operation where I served as manager of Technical Services. In 2001, I was assigned to our El Abra operation in northern Chile and served as Process Plant Manager and Operations General Manager. El Abra is located in the Atacama Desert region of Chile and is at an elevation of 3300-4100 meters (10,800’-13,500’). A major accomplishment during my time at El Abra was achieving design production of 225,000mtpy of copper cathodes. In 2005, I relocated to Copiapó, Chile as Operations General Manager of our Candelaria and Ojos del Salado operations. I was recently named General Manager of our Tenke-Fungurume copper/cobalt project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I have authored and co-authored two technical papers and am a member of the Young Leaders Committee. Personal On a personal note, I have climbed two peaks above 6,000 meters (20,000’) and enjoy fly-fishing and woodworking. I live in Copiapó, Region III, Chile with my wife, Marny, and three children, Zach, Zane, and Emma.
