The 2006 Robert M. Dreyer Award  

Awarded To: Anton G. Esterhuizen

“In recognition of a uniquely successful career of industrial minerals, coal, base and precious metals exploration, highlighted by discoveries of a number of world class deposits including heavy mineral sand deposits along the East coast of Africa, the Rhovan vanadium deposit in South Africa, gold deposits in Tanzania, and his instrumental contribution to the successful re-evaluation of the Burnstone gold deposit in the Witwatersrand, and for his lecture, ‘Successful Exploration in Africa’ ”
Anton Esterhuizen is Managing Director of Pangea Exploration (Pty) Limited, a company based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Anton graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1973 with a BSc (Hons) and later completed the MSc (Mineral Exploration) degree at Rhodes University with distinction. He commenced his career with Gold Fields of South Africa (GFSA) as exploration geologist working on and identifying a number of coal, base mineral and gold opportunities and was the GFSA country manager for Namibia for four years until 1987 when he resigned to become a founder member of Pangea Exploration. He has been responsible for the discovery and evaluation of the world class high grade Rhovan vanadium deposit, the Taaiboschspruit colliery and contributed to the re-evaluation of the large Burnstone gold deposit, all in South Africa. In Tanzania he was responsible for the discovery of a number of gold deposits including the Tulawaka deposit and his activities attracted major players into that country. By understanding the geological history of the African coastline he was responsible for the discovery of four mineral sand deposits including the world class Corridor Sands deposit in Mozambique and the Kwale deposit in Kenya. He is currently working on a portfolio of six diamond projects in a number of African countries. Anton has been responsible for the creation of thousands of work opportunities in Africa. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa and the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Des Pretorius Memorial Award for outstanding work in economic geology in Africa. He is also a director of Tan Range Exploration Corporation.

About The Robert M. Dreyer Award:

The Robert M. Dreyer Award in Applied Economic Geology, established as an annual Award in 1999, recognizes outstanding achievements in applied economic geology. The outstanding achievements so recognized must have been accomplished through commercial exploration or development of metalliferous and/or nonmetalliferous mineral deposits.
