The 2006 SME Distinguished Member Award  

Awarded To: James R. Arnold

In recognition and appreciation of outstanding service to the minerals industry and to the Society.
Jim Arnold is the Vice President Technical Services for Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation. His background is primarily in operations and engineering where he served as General Manager for several mines and development projects for Gold Fields Mining Corp., Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp., and Kinross. Arnold’s background is an operating mix of process metallurgy, mining and maintenance. Before joining Coeur d’Alene Mines he served as Principal, President and CEO of Knight Piesold and Co. in Denver, Colorado. He has also worked for Kennecott in Missouri and W.R. Grace in Montana. During his tenure in Nevada, Arnold served on numerous committees with the Nevada Mining Association including Chairman of the Environmental Committee and Wildlife Subcommittee where many of the State’s environmental regulations were developed. Arnold also served on the Board of the NvMA and as Chairman of the Association in 1995. He is a member or contributor to the Missouri Mining Industry Council, New Mexico Mining Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Mineral Information Institute. Arnold is a registered Professional Engineer in four states and has served on SME’s Professional Registration Committee. In 2000 he won the Ivan Rahn Award for his contributions to education and professional development. That same year he was named Mill Man of Distinction by the MPD for serving as Chairman of the division. He has authored over 25 technical publications and has been published in 10 books, including Co-Editing the SME 1991 book, Plant Operators. Arnold has a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho and an M.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri – Rolla.

About The SME Distinguished Member Award:

The Distinguished Member Award, established in 1975, is presented to a select few who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating significant and sustained contributions to the minerals industry and to SME. There must be some contributions to both the industry and SME, though significant and sustained contributions can be to either one.
