The 2007 MPD Outstanding Young Engineer Award

Awarded To: Peter Amelunxen

Peter was born in Williams Lake, British Columbia and spent his childhood in Canada, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. He finished high school in New Orleans in 1994 and studied mining engineering at the University of Arizona as a recipient of the Freeport McMoRan scholarship. In 1998 Peter joined the Minnovex Technologies comminution team in Toronto, Ontario, and as part of a Masters degree in mineral processing with McGill University, Peter worked on grinding circuit modeling and point hardness testing methods. His efforts contributed to the development of cost effective geostatistics-based ore characterization methods that have been used in the design process for many new concentrators. The technology is described in his McGill master’s thesis and in the SAG 2001 paper he coauthored with Barrick Goldstrike personnel. In 2001 Peter transferred to the process control group and began integrating expert systems, participating on various projects including both G2 expert system applications at BHPBilliton Escondida. Peter joined the Phelps Dodge team in Bagdad, Arizona in 2003 to drive the integration of the Knowledgescape expert system. During his Bagdad tenure he presented a paper at 2005 SME annual meeting that was later selected for Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, worked closely with CiDRA Corporation to develop a novel gas holdup meter for flotation cell control, and developed his fondness for operations as the general foreman of the Bagdad mill. In 2005 Peter transferred to Phelps’ moly division and collaborated with the Phelps Dodge Process Technology Center to work on alternative moly oxidation methods. His efforts yielded a patent application for Phelps Dodge and earned him the first ever awarded CEO’s Exceptional Performance Award in December 2006, which he shared with fellow researcher John Wilmot from the PTC. In early 2007 Peter was appointed mill operations superintendent at Cerro Verde and has been a key member of the ramp up team that took the new concentrator to design production levels. He lives in Arequipa with his wife, Bronwyn.
