The 2008 Ivan B. Rahn Education Award  

Awarded To: David D. Eyer


Dave is a native of Hamburg, PA. He received his BS in Mining Engineering from Lehigh University in 1960 and MS from West Virginia University in 1967. All of his mining career was with Consolidation Coal Co (now Consol Energy Inc). The first half of his Consol career beginning in 1960 was in mine operations starting in Morgantown, WV as project engineer at the Humphrey Mine where he later became assistant superintendent. He became the first superintendent at the Blacksville #1 Mine in 1967 and later Manager of Mines of Consol’s Pittsburgh Coal Co division and in 1975 Vice President- Allegheny Operations. In 1977 he became Vice President- Engineering where he remained until his retirement in 1995. He traveled widely to coal and hard rock mining areas in the US and internationally. In 1990 he became a volunteer mining engineering program evaluator under ABET Inc. Institutions he visited as an ABET team member included the University of Kentucky, University of Alabama, Columbia University, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Missouri- Rolla, and the University of Arizona. He served a five year term as one of SME’s two commissioners on the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. He served as team chair for visits to institutions including the University of Houston, Wichita State University, University of Texas- Arlington, Montana State University, Oklahoma Christian University, Indiana- Purdue University at Ft Wayne, SUNY at Syracuse, and Henry Cogwell College in Everett WA. In 2004 he was the mining engineering program evaluator for the “substantial equivalence” visit to Middle East Technical Institute in Ankara, Turkey. In 1993 he started the Senior Design Competition now a joint SME- Pittsburgh Section and the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institution of America (PCMIA) activity. He continues as a judge. He was the prime mover in combining the annual SME- Pittsburgh Section and the PCMIA meetings into a single successful event. Dave is registered as a Professional Engineer in WV, PA and FL. In retirement his main activities include the performing arts primarily in advising, scheduling and fundraising for the many boards on which he has served. He notes with great pride that three of his five children are practicing engineers (one mining and two civil) including two of his three daughters. He and Irene, his wife of 48 years, have one grandchild with two more on the way.

The Ivan B. Rahn Education Award, established in 1995, recognizes distinguished contributions to the educational activities within SME and is open to all SME members who have shown long-term interest in and have significantly contributed to SME activities relating to ABET, student affairs, continuing education, professional registration, and/or the Council of Education.
