The 2008 SME Distinguished Member Award  

Awarded To: Ramana G. Reddy


Reddy has more than 24 years of teaching and research experience in the field of chemical and materials engineering. He has served as professor and chair of the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at University of Nevada, Reno, as visiting researcher at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and as a researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, IL. Reddy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah. He has conducted projects involving thermodynamics and kinetics of metallurgical reactions, plasma processing, molten salts and ionic liquids electrolysis and fuel cells. He has published more than 260 research papers and 10 books, including one undergraduate student textbook in thermodynamics. Reddy has organized 18 national and international symposia. He was appointed the University of Alabama coordinator for the National Space Science and Technology Center and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He served as a council member for the Alabama State Committee for Department of Defense-EPSCoR programs. Reddy has chaired or been a member of 24 professional societies committees, 42 technical sessions and 25 public and university committees. He has been a consultant to 25 industries, federal institutions and universities. He has taught 12 continuing education short courses and was the associate editor of the Journal of Phase Equilibria. Reddy is a Fellow of ASM International. He has received the Service Award and the Best Research Paper Award from Light Metals Division of TMS, the Eminent Engineer Award from Tau Beta Pi and the 2002 TMS Extraction and Processing Distinguished Lecture Award.

About The SME Distinguished Member Award:

The Distinguished Member Award, established in 1975, is presented to a select few who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating significant and sustained contributions to the minerals industry and to SME. There must be some contributions to both the industry and SME, though significant and sustained contributions can be to either one.
