Awarded To: Jan M. Mutmansky

Jan M. Mutmansky, P.E. Professor Emeritus of Mining Engineering Department of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering The Pennsylvania State University After starting as a mathematics major at the California State University of Pennsylvania, Jan Mutmansky entered the mining engineering program at The Pennsylvania State University. He worked his way through his college years as a co-op student and graduated with high distinction in 1964. After completing his B.S. degree, he stayed at Penn State to complete the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Dr. Mutmansky's industrial experience includes jobs with the Ingersoll-Rand Company and the Kennecott Copper Corporation. In addition, he held a position as a mining engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pennsylvania, working in the roof control and dust control groups. He possesses previous academic experience at the University of Utah and at West Virginia University. While at West Virginia University, he was twice the winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Mineral and Energy Resources. He has been with The Pennsylvania State University since 1977, serving first as Program Coordinator of the mining technology programs at the Fayette Campus before his move to the University Park campus in 1981. The major research interests of Jan Mutmansky have included coal mine respirable dust problems, mine ventilation, coalbed methane economics, and computer applications in mining engineering. He is the author of over 75 publications with most being in the areas of mine ventilation, mine systems analysis, and mine aerosol measurement and control. He is the co-author of the second and third editions of Mine Ventilation and Air Conditioning and an associate editor of the second edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook. He recently co-authored the second edition of Introductory Mining Engineering with Dr. Howard L. Hartman. Dr. Mutmansky holds a P.E. license from Pennsylvania and has also been active in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). He has served SME as a member of the board of directors and as Program Chairman, Chairman of the Education Board, and Chairman of the Mining and Exploration Division. He has chaired ten additional committees and been a member of over 25 committees in SME. He has also served as an accreditation visitor for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, both in the area of mining technology and in the area of mining engineering. He was named a Distinguished Member of SME in 1990.
