The 2008 Syd S Peng Ground Control in Mining Award

Awarded To: Thomas M. Barczak

In recognition of his extraordinary ability to extrapolate standing, intrinsic and shield support performances with ground reaction behaviors.
Dr. Barczak has 32 years of federal government service, beginning his career in 1976 with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the material handling area working on continuous haulage systems. Tom is most known for his work with the Mine Roof Simulator, which he has been doing since 1980 when the facility was first commissioned. Tom has provided leadership in promoting miner safety through research to improve roof support design and application. He is recognized as an expert in this area of ground control throughout the mining industry. More recently, Tom has been serving as Team Leader for the Geotechnical Engineering Section in Rock Safety Engineering Branch at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, working with his team members to develop risk assessment and pillar design practices for underground stone mines while continuing his work on developing support design methodologies based on ground reaction behavior. This pioneering work has the potential to transform the way support design is practiced, eliminating the trial and error and experienced-based approach in favor of an engineered solution that will select the best support strategy for a particular condition. Recently, Tom has accepted the Branch Chief position for the Rock Safety Engineering Branch at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Tom has a degree in both Physics and Mining Engineering. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from West Liberty State College 1975 and earned his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University in 2004 and 2005.
