The 2010 Howard L. Hartman Award

Awarded To: Dr. Andrzej Wala

Andrzej M. Wala is the winner of the 2010 Howard L. Hartman Award. The Hartman Award, established in 1989, recognizes distinguished contributions in practice, teaching or research in the field of underground ventilation engineering. The award is presented biennially at the U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium and consists of a plaque engraved with the name of the award and the recipient. Election to this honor is by the Executive Committees of the Mining & Exploration and Coal & Energy divisions of SME and the SME Board of Directors. The 2010 award was presented to Wala at the 13th U.S./ North American Mine Ventilation Symposium at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON, Canada. Wala is a professor at the University of Kentucky (UK) and teaches undergraduate and graduate level mine ventilation courses. He has received the Outstanding Teacher Award within the Department of Mining Engineering eight times and received the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America Stephan McCann Award for Excellence in Education. Wala’s research interests include the dynamics of flow in mine ventilation networks; the dynamics of diesel exhaust gas concentrations in confined headings; the monitoring and control of ventilation networks; expert systems applications in mining; the development of training exercises to prepare miners for preventing; coping with underground mine ventilation emergencies; industrial testing and computer-simulation studies of mine ventilation systems. In the last 10 years, Wala’s research has focused on the face ventilation of deep-cut mining with continuous miners. Recently, he was awarded a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health grant to educate two M.S. and two Ph.D. students in the area of mine ventilation. Wala has more than 40 years of experience in the mining industry and serves as a consultant. His expertise has been used to investigate and identify problems that have resulted in fatal disasters related to mine ventilation. Wala is a member of SME. He organized the seventh U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995, sponsored by the Underground Ventilation Committee of SME and served as the chair of the committee in 2004.
