The 2003 Stefanko Best Paper Award  

Awarded To: Frank Chase

For the paper: “Reducing the Risk of Ground Falls During Pillar Recovery”
Frank Chase received his B.S. degree in geology from West Virginia University. For the past 26 years, he has worked at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in coal-mine ground control. Chase has been involved with various studies including remedial support techniques for underground geologic hazards, coal-mine bump control, longwall gate-entry stability and retreat-mining pillar design. Chase has conducted geotechnical evaluations in approximately 350 U.S. coal mines and has written more than 25 technical publications.

The Stefanko Best Paper Award, established in 1983, recognizes authors presenting papers in the Coal & Energy Division technical sessions, at SME Annual Meetings, for their contributions to the body of knowledge.
