The 2003 Stefanko Best Paper Award  

Awarded To: Deno M. Pappas


For the paper: “Reducing the Risk of Ground Falls During Pillar Recovery”
Deno Pappas received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been employed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines for 22 years. His research interests include conducting laboratory rock-mechanic studies, evaluating the performance of spray-on support liners and coatings and analyzing ground-fall accident trends. Pappas has written 28 publications related to ground control. He received the 1996 Outstanding Paper in Applied Research Award from the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics in Montreal, PQ, Canada.
