In recognition of outstanding achievements and contributions to the development and improvement of environmental professionalism in the minerals industry.
Steven D. Botts is the Vice President of Environmental, Health and Safety for the Compañia Mineral Antamina. Steve joined the company in December 1997, as director of EHS, and was promoted to VP EHS in July 1999. In this position, Steve is responsible for overall management of the company’s Environmental, Health and Safety Management system, including permitting, compliance and loss control. He is also responsible for ongoing stakeholder relationships with communities, NGOs and government. Prior to joining CMA, Steve was the Director of Environmental Affairs for Echo Bay Mines where he was responsible for the corporate environmental program including the audit program, the environmental management system, due diligence activities and project permitting. In this capacity he was involved with the environmental aspects of operating mines in Canada and the United States, and development properties in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, and Russia. He has also held environmental positions with Amax Gold Company, Sonora Mining Company, Newmont Gold Company and Barrick Goldstrike Mines. Steve has a B.S. Degree in General Studies from the University of Nevada, Reno, and has a Masters Degree in Environmental Policy and Management program from the University of Denver.
Steve is currently the chair of the Sustainable Development Committee of SME and has held the position of Chair of the Environmental Division, and is actively involved in the Lima, Perú Section of SME as well.
Steve has been named as a visiting professor at the National Agrarian University in Lima, Perú, and is a board member of the recently formed Ancash Foundation, which is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development within the Ancash region of Perú.
The Environmental Division Distinguished Service Award, established in 2001, recognizes members who have significantly contributed to the workings of SME and the Environmental Division and have an outstanding reputation for professionalism and accomplishment.
