The 2003 Robert Peele Memorial Award

Awarded To: Daniel R. Hack

For his paper “A Methodology for the Geostatistical Characterization and Exploratory Data Analysis of Sand and Gravel Deposits”
Daniel R. Hack is a graduate of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (USA) with an honors degree in mineral engineering (mining engineering option). He began his career in his teenage years as a diesel and rock crusher mechanic at a small-town red scoria (ornamental stone) mining operation in rural Washington State USA.
Hack is the founder of the Pacific Northwest based consulting firm Halstead GeoNumerics. Since 1996, he has been a consultant to sand and gravel producers and concrete companies throughout the region, specializing in site development, Federal and Tribal regulatory issues, and aggregate resource characterization. His company also develops custom software for sand and gravel mining applications, such as scripts and extensions for use with Surpac Vision.
He has published more than fifteen technical papers, and his research pertaining to the geostatistical and spatial data characterization of sand and gravel deposits will be the subject of a chapter in an upcoming United States Geological Survey Contributions in Industrial Minerals Research Bulletin.
Hack is a member of the Industrial Advisory Board for the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Department of Mineral Engineering, and is on the Organizing Committee for Infomina (Simposium Internacional de Tecnologia de la Informacion Aplicada a la Mineria), hosted every two years in Lima, Peru by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru. He has been active in the APCOM symposia since 1999.
