The 2002 A. Frank Alsobrook Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Distinguished Service Award  

Awarded To: Robert C. Freas


In recognition for significant contributions to the workings of SME and the Industrial Minerals Division.
Robert (Bob) Freas is Vice President Marketing for Franklin Industrial Minerals, Nashville, Tn. Prior to joining Franklin in 1985 Mr. Freas was Director of Operations, Limestone Products Corporation, Sparta, N.J., and prior to that Chief Geologist, Dravo Lime Company, Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Freas holds a BS in Geology from Baldwin Wallace College, MS in Geology from Miami University (Ohio), and an MBA from Rutgers University. Mr. Freas’ SME service includes Chairman Industrial Minerals Division (1986), Vice President Finance (1991-1992), President (1994), and was a Krumb lecturer (2000). Mr. Freas has served two full terms on the AIME Board of Trustees and is the 2004 AIME President, and is Vice Chairman, Board of Directors of The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. He has authored numerous articles in mining and geology including three chapters in the 6th Edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most recently he was Chairman of the inaugural Dreyer Conference on Global Kaolin Resources.
