The 1989 M&E Distinguished Service Award 
Awarded To: Donald E. Ranta
For outstanding contributions to the M&E Division programs and activities.
Donald E. Ranta is president of NRX Global (USA) Corp., a company involved in business-to-business e-commerce for the mining industry. He is responsible for the company’s U.S. operations. Previously he was president of Union Hill, vice president of worldwide exploration for Echo Bay Mines, manager of North American exploration with Phelps Dodge Mining Co., and also served with Amax Exploration, Climax Molybdenum Co., Gulf Mineral Resources and Kennecott Copper Corp. Ranta earned a PhD in geological engineering (geology) from the Colorado School of Mines, an MS in geological engineering (geology) from the Mackay School of Mines, and a BS in geological engineering from the University of Minnesota. He was a 1994 recipient of the President’s Citation, a 1991 Henry Krumb Lecturer, the 1990 recipient of the SME Distinguished Service Award and served as President of SME in 2000. He was coordinator of the Project and Mining Geology section of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook, 2nd edition. He is also a member of the Society of Economic Geologists, DREGS, and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
The Mining & Exploration Division Service Award, established in 1985, honors members of SME (with the exception of all M&E Division Officers at the time they hold office) who have made outstanding contributions to the M&E Division in its programs or other activities.
