The 2002 President’s Citation Award  

Awarded To: David D. Lauriski

For significant achievements as Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. Under his direction, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has enhanced the content, scope and format of its regulatory and professional outreach programs. He has publicly emphasized the critical importance of a sound policy on mine health and safety, while promoting the development and wise use of the nation's mineral resources. His leadership and guidance enabled MSHA to play an important and pivotal role in the Quecreek Mine rescue efforts this year. The Society, its members and the public are indebted to David Lauriski for his commitment, leadership and accomplishments.

About The President’s Citation Award:

The President’s Citation, established in 1978, recognizes a significant individual contribution culminating in the SME year of tenure of the selecting President. The award consists of a presentation case with a certificate on one side and the citation on the other. Recipients of this award shall be the personal selection of the President of the Society.
