SME hosts Chairman of House Energy and Minerals Subcommittee
On August 22, SME hosted a briefing at our offices in Englewood, Colorado with Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO), chairman of the Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee of the House Natural Resources Committee, for representatives of Denver-based mining companies. Lamborn discussed his Subcommittee’s legislative priorities for 2013 with regards to mining and minerals, and fielded questions from over 30 mining experts in industry, government and academia. Specifically he talked about critical and strategic minerals legislation as well as recent oversight hearings his subcommittee has held on abuse of the Endangered Species Act, pressures on coal mining in the Powder River Basin and Appalachia, and the importance of mining jobs to the American economy. He also made commitments to SME to help get the SEC to act on SME’s petition for rulemaking on Industry Guide 7, which is the SEC’s basic resource and reserves disclosure policy for mining companies. SME is seen by policy-makers, like Chairman Lamborn, as providing the information they need to make informed decisions on how their policy choices will impact the industry, the environment, the economy and public safety. SME’s Executive Director, Dave Kanagy said, “We are pleased that SME is able to provide a forum for Congressman Lamborn to have unfettered access to mining industry executives and experts.” A report of the visit can be found on ME Online here.

Let’s work together!
The Campaign for Mining is underway!

The SME Foundation Board of Trustees, SME members and Corporate Roundtable Partners are standing together to support the Foundation and its programs. With support from across the mining and minerals industry, our Campaign for Mining will invest in targeted programs to meet the challenges facing our industry in the years ahead.

Together we are the key to global prosperity!

Foundation programs that need your support:
  • Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology – to ensure that universities offering degrees in mining, geological and geophysical engineering in the United States maintain high standards.
  • Minerals Education Coalition – develops and disseminates factual and timely curriculum to K-12 educators across the U.S. and globally for use in classrooms, as well as informal education, science and community settings.
  • Professional Engineers Licensure – sets the standard for mining and mineral engineers working in the field. This credential indicates a high level of skill and additional education throughout the industry.
  • New programs – the Foundation will be able to add new programs, such as expanding Miners Give Back and adding a Career Transition program.
Our goal is to raise $1.6 million per year to provide world class programming for our members, the industry and our communities. As of June 7, contributions to the campaign total $1,473,948. For the success of the Foundation programs, let’s work together!

MSHA launches S&S rate calculator
On August 14, MSHA launched a new online “Significant and Substantial (S&S)” rate calculator that enables mine operators who implement a corrective action program to determine if their mine is successfully reducing its S&S violations. The S&S Rate Calculator is an enhancement to the two-year-old Pattern of Violations monitoring tool, which allows mine operators, miners and stakeholders to measure a mine's performance against MSHA's specific screening criteria for violations. The S&S rate calculator allows users to determine a mine's rate of S&S violations for any specific date range. Users need only the mine's seven-digit ID number to find data. The S&S rate calculator is available at:
