SME presses SEC to act on petition for rulemaking
On November 21, SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy sent a letter to the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), pressing the agency to act on SME’s year-old petition for rulemaking over Industry Guide 7 (IG7), the SEC disclosure guidance applicable to publically traded U.S. mining companies. IG7 has become increasingly outdated and out-of-sync with mineral reporting and disclosure standards used in the rest of the world. SME points to a recent speech by SEC Chair Mary Jo White, in which she used the mining industry as an example of a sector that is long overdue for reform of their respective industry disclosure guidance. On October 1, 2012, SME filed a petition for rulemaking with the SEC to amend IG7 to realign the U.S. reporting regime for mining companies, both for the protection of investors and for the removal of competitive harm to U.S. mining companies.
