Government, Education, and Mining - GEM

About GEM

Everything we have and everything we use comes from our natural resources. Thus, through the efforts of GEM volunteers, the public learns that “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined!”

National GEM Activities

SME's Government, Education and Mining (GEM) Program was established in 1975 to raise public understanding and appreciation for the important role that the minerals industry plays in improving the quality of life for people around the world. The program operates under a national GEM committee and a network of grassroots committees affiliated with local SME sections. GEM activities at all levels strive to bring SME members together with teachers, journalists, legislators and other important groups that educate and inform the public.
