Mentor Program
Annual Meeting Mentor Program
Whether you are a seasoned SME Annual Meeting veteran or a first timer, you have the opportunity to affect the future of SME by participating as a mentor in this year's SME Annual Meeting Mentor Program. Mentors can be instrumental in helping students to begin developing a network in the industry by showing students the ropes and introducing them to colleagues. This is a marvelous opportunity to have a real impact in the society at a personal level. Students requesting mentors will be matched with mentor volunteers, based on information drawn from the Mentor Form. Both Mentors and Students will be notified before the 2008 Annual Meeting.
To volunteer or request further information for the Mentor Program, contact Mona Vandervoort or phone 303-948-4227, or download the application forms below (PDF Format), complete and return to:

Are You Mentor Material?
Mentor programs, because of the increasing number of twenty-somethings in the workplace, are becoming very popular again. But not everyone is suited to be a mentor. Mentoring isn’t just a technique that can be applied to solve problems of training, skills, development and retention. Creating a meaningful mentor/student partnership is an accomplishment. The mentor should have enough experience and contacts to be able to help establish a professional network for the student. The mentor must not be in competition with the student the student’s intellectual independence from the mentor must be carefully preserved.
Information Students Should Know About Mentor/Student Relationships
Students are matched with mentors according to areas of specialization. Each student-mentor relationship is unique. This is a volunteer activity between students and SME members. All information provided on the application form will be used solely for facilitating the Student Mentor Program. This should be a positive experience for you, if for any reason you are dissatisfied with the mentor assigned to you, please contact Mona Vandervoort.
Students should:
- Prepare questions in advance.
- Be relaxed. The mentor is there because he/she wants to be and you are too.
- Distinguish between what you want as a “hard” answer and just the mentor’s opinion.
Mentors will:
- Contact you prior to the conference.
- Establish a scheduled meeting time/place to connect with you during the SME Annual Meeting.
- Volunteer their time to give you the best experience during the meeting.
