McIntosh Engineering Scholarship Guidelines

The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is awarded annually to up to six promising undergraduate students entering their junior year of an accredited undergraduate degree program in Mining Engineering with a focus on underground mining. The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is a renewable scholarship with total potential funding of $12,000 per student: $5,000 for junior year and, subject to renewal approval, an additional $7,000 for senior year. Selection of scholarship recipients and approval of scholarship renewal is at the discretion of the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship Committee.

Applicants must be completing their sophomore year in a regular course of study leading to a degree in Mining Engineering. A 2.75 cumulative grade point average is required. A desire for and probability of success in a career in Mining Engineering will be important factors in selection of the successful candidate.

Rules and Procedures:

  1. Applicant must be a student member in good standing with SME.
  2. Applicant must be fully matriculated at a school approved by SME.
  3. Applicant must submit the following materials by April 1 for consideration:
    1. Completed scholarship application.
    2. Two letters of reference – one from university faculty and one from a mining industry contact/employer.
    3. Resume detailing past education and work experience.
    4. Copy of most recent transcript (unofficial copy is permitted).
    5. Signed FERPA waiver.
      IMPORTANT NOTE: All SME Scholarships require that a completed FERPA waiver be uploaded along with your application. Click HERE to download the required form.
    6. Short statement describing interest in/passion for a career in Mining Engineering.

  4. Applicants must also submit an essay as described on the next page.
  5. Recipients of the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship in their junior year are required to submit the following information by June 15 of the following year for renewal consideration:

    1. Copy of most recent transcript.
    2. A letter from faculty confirming the student continues to be enrolled and active in the program.
Timeline:
  1. Completed applications due by April 1.
  2. Applications provided to committee for review by April 8.
  3. Committee provides names of selected students to SME by May 31.
  4. After receiving the names, SME notifies all applicants of their selection status.
  5. SME mails checks to each recipient’s department chair by September 1.

McIntosh Engineering Scholarship Fund Scholarship Application Essay Competition

As a practicing mining professional (engineer, technician, and / or project support team) you will be required to balance technical, environmental, human, and economic constraints in the design and safe construction / operation of mine development projects and operating mines. Your work will require knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the ability to find creative solutions to address complex issues.

Purpose of the Essay
The purpose of this essay question is to identify scholarship candidates who demonstrate:
  • An ability to identify and communicate issues and potential solutions
  • A passion for mining

Essay Topic
  • Research and briefly describe a mining project in your local area (state, province or region) and identify a current issue or problem related to the design, construction, or operation of the mine.
  • Describe your fact-based views with respect to possible solution(s), including consideration of the technical, environmental, human and economic constraints.

Essay Requirements
  • The essay must be between 1,200 and 1,500 words, typed and double-spaced.
  • An electronic copy of your essay either in pdf or Microsoft Word format must be submitted with your scholarship application.
  • Up to three original graphs/pictures can be included to support your essay but are not required.
  • Any quotations or text ascribed to a source must be referenced using MLA or other standard citation formats.


You must type your application and essay in English to ensure that all items can be read clearly.
