SME Sections 
A Local Section is a legally constituted unit of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., encompassing a specific geographical area. Sections help enhance the professional development of their members and provide local service to the public. SME recognizes that the diversity of Local Section membership creates diverse needs, and that the Local Section Officers are in the best position to determine Section needs and direction.
More than 50 local SME Sections facilitate the exchange of information and increase grassroots participation in SME programs and services. Members have the opportunity to network with their peers and hear valuable presentations through section activities.
SME National supports local sections in a variety of ways as detailed below. SME National Programs for Local Sections
Henry Krumb Lecture Series
SME helps bring outstanding speakers to the Local Sections through the Henry Krumb Lecture Series. The program is offered to all local SME sections to enhance their appreciation and understanding of important new methods and technologies. Lecturers are selected from the professionals who present technical papers at the SME annual meeting. The Series is administered by SME. At the core of each local section is a group of dedicated volunteers who recruit members, organize section activities, work with local SME student chapters, raise money, provide educational outreach, and more. To recognize our member volunteers for their hard work at the local section level, SME has created the "Local Section Hero" program. Beginning January 2011, a "Local Section Hero" will be profiled each month in Mining Engineering magazine. This column will highlight an individual or a group of individuals who carry out unique and exemplary activity at the local section level. If you know someone who is providing exemplary service to your local section, please take a few moments to nominate that individual as a Local Section Hero!
Local Section Grant Program
In 2009, SME initiated a Local Section Grant program to provide financial support to Local Sections and, by extension, the industry. The support generated through the Local Section Grant Program is intended to assist sections with accomplishing specific goals or starting specific programs, such as production of outreach material, professional development products and services, and educational programs. To date, 16 grants totaling over $30,000 have been awarded to various local sections. If your section is considering a special project, but needs some financial assistance to get it done, submit your grant application today. Applications are due July 1, sections are notified of grant approval by October 1, and funds are distributed shortly thereafter. Click here to download the grant application.
Newsletter
SME National publishes a quarterly newsletter for local sections. The newsletter contains brief articles of interest to section officers and members regarding SME National initiatives, projects and programs going on in other sections, SME member news, and more. Operations Manual
SME publishes a MANUAL OF OPERATION FOR SME LOCAL SECTION which is updated as needed. This manual has been created for the Local Section Officer as a tool in the operation of your Section and is intended to give you guidance, information, and ideas to assist you in the successful administration of your Section.

SME National makes it easy for local sections to provide information and updates regarding the local section officers. Any time there is a change in your sections leadership, simply click on the link below to access the online Local Section Officer Updates form. Complete the form and click “submit” and you’re done! Section Websites
SME National hosts webpages for each local section at no cost to the section. Section officers are responsible for providing any necessary updates to Tessa Baxter to be placed on the section’s page. Click on the links below to be directed to each section’s page.
