Knowledge Sharing, Alignment & Collaboration - Culture Shifts in Tailings Management

It's well known that integrated, diverse and collaborative teams perform better. In tailings, siloed teams and isolated people, focused on completing individual tasks without interaction, can be dangerous. And, when people are uninformed about the risks that they manage, or how their actions contribute to a larger system’s health, this can lead to major issues going unidentified and unchecked. The belief may be that all is well when the truth can be far from it.
This presentation will acknowledge some collaborative projects and traction that have been observed in the tailings management space over the past few years, followed by how best practices and lessons shared can be brought successfully into other organizations. Shifts in culture can really move mountains - where the working environment invites and enables each and every employee to have a voice, where diversity of perspective and thought, knowledge and experience are considered, and where teammates are trained and empowered to make a difference.
Karen Chovan is a tailings risk and impact management specialist, and CEO and Founder of Enviro Integration Strategies Inc. A strategic project manager, she has engaged with Boards, innovation committees, national and international tailings working groups, and operations to find value-driven, sustainable solutions for mine waste management challenges. With 20+ years in the mining sector, Karen is deeply familiar with industry tailings standards and associations, including the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management, and the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining Initiative. She also recently collaborated with Agnico Eagle Mines to develop an innovative software specifically designed to create a one-stop knowledge base and evaluate the risks of critical waste infrastructure, to comply with global mine waste management standards, and to produce transparent performance disclosures
