On August 4, SME filed comments with the Securities and Exchange Commission on their proposed rule, Modernization of Property Disclosures for Mining Registrants.
Overall, SME supports the SEC’s effort to eliminate the existing Industry Guide 7 disclosure guidelines, related precedent and informal guidance and to replace it with disclosure and technical standards that are consistent with the globally accepted CRIRSCO reporting template. Thanks to SME’s Resources and Reserves Committee for developing the comments. |

- Radon Regs for Uranium Mines
The U.S. EPA has submitted the final version of an overhaul of standards for radon releases from uranium processing facilities to the White House Office of Management and Budget for interagency review. The proposal addresses radon emission standards for uranium processing facilities as well as the tailings impoundments for storing byproducts. - Permit caught between a rock and a cat?
A lone male jaguar appears to be the center of controversy surrounding a proposed Arizona copper mine. Nearly half dozen federal agencies are involved in the permitting process for the proposed Rosemont Mine, and more than 720 studies and reports have been filed during the past two years. The Fish & Wildlife Service has found that the mine can proceed, while the Regional Army Corps of Engineers have recommended that their agency not issue dredge-and-fill permits. Local environmentalists contend that the mine would overlap the territory roamed by the jaguar. Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals Inc. has vowed to work with agencies to satisfy all requirements to grant the permit.
