Tunneling Fundamentals, Practice, and Innovations The Short Course will be taught through the Center for Underground Construction & Tunneling at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, June 20-23, 2016. The 3.5-day short course focuses on the fundamentals, application and innovations of tunnel planning design, and construction in soft ground, mixed ground and hard rock. Taught by experts from around the world, the knowledge gained during this program will provide solutions to the unique challenges of the tunneling and underground construction industries. Course participants will earn 2.3 CEU credits upon completion. In addition to classroom presentations on all tunneling topics by world-leading experts, exclusive to this short course is the opportunity to participate in hands-on labs and interactive demonstrations. WTC Sets Attendance Records | |
The hills of San Francisco welcomed tunnelers from around the world to the 2016 World Tunnel Congress, April 22-28. Attendance exceeded expectations with more than 2,300 visitors from 54 countries converging at the week-long event. A record-setting 298 exhibit booths showcased the most current products and technical developments in the industry. Attendees took advantage of the unique opportunity to tour the Central Subway Project in the heart of San Francisco. During the conference, the Underground Construction Association of SME Young Members Committee presented 47 scholarships totaling $70,000 in cash and benefits to students seeking a career in the underground construction and tunneling industry. Scholarships included full registration to the conference, travel reimbursement, and a one-year student membership. Follow Big Bertha’s Progress |
As of May 26, 2016, Seattle’s Big Bertha TBM has traveled 2,255 of the scheduled 9,270 feet in its route beneath the city. The SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct is being replaced with a unique tunnel system utilizing a massive TBM nicknamed Big Bertha. Once the tunnel opens, the viaduct will be dismantled and new public space along the downtown waterfront will be constructed.
