SME PE Review Course

This review course aids individuals preparing for the mining/mineral processing professional engineer (P.E.) examination. P.E. Registration is one way of demonstrating the credibility of the engineer's work. It is the only legal way for an engineer to offer mining/mineral engineering services to the general public. It is important to note that this is a review course. It is not an introduction to any of the topics covered. Its purpose is to provide an overall review of the subjects covered in the test. You should be familiar and comfortable with the fundamentals of geology, engineering and chemistry/metallurgy to get the most out of this review/preparation. Instructors do not know the contents of the exam nor do they submit problems for the exam.

The P.E. Review Course is a 5-day course covering each of the examination subject topics, terminology, concepts and also provides a multitude of information and sources for executing the exam. The exam itself is open book and given in two 4-hour sessions consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions.

SME Requests PE Members Complete the PAKS Survey

Every 7 years, the Professional Engineers examination for Mining / Mineral Processing (MMP) and the subject matter of the exam is updated in a process named the Professional Activities and Knowledge Study (PAKS). SME completed the PAKS in 2002-2003, 2009-10, and 2015-2016. A critical activity of PAKS is asking engineers if the topical outline of the subject matter is current and reflects what PE’s do on the job. Please access the survey through the link below. Your response will greatly advance our professions and assist in the PAKS. Thank you.
