Description: | This presentation attempts to answer the question, "Why does geology matter for tunneling?" To this end, several tunneling case studies from around the world are presented. In each case, the key geological factors that influenced the tunneling process are highlighted. Issues related to in-situ stress, rockmass heterogeneity, and simply insufficient site investigation are considered. Ultimately, these case studies prove that development of a robust geological model before tunneling begins is critical to ensuring that ground behavior can be anticipated and managed. |
