SME Peru Student Chapter Wins Membership Challenge
The SME Student Chapter of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno, Peru, is the proud winner of the 2015 SME Student Chapter Fall Membership Challenge. The Challenge is an annual membership contest between SME student chapters to recruit newcomers to join the student chapter and become SME members.
Through their membership, a student’s opportunities to be involved with industry professionals and the potential for training and skills development are enhanced exponentially.
Congratulations to the 2015 winners:
• 1st Place - Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Puno, Peru
• 2nd Place - Indian School of Mines, Jharkhand, India
• 3rd Place - South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City, South Dakota
• Grand Prize - Virginia Polytech, Blacksburg, Virginia
Schools that recruited 25 or more new students during the challenge were Virginia Polytech, South Dakota School of Mines, and Missouri University of Science & Technology.

- Founding Father of Mine Safety Honored
In June, mine safety professionals from the U.S. and Canada gathered at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the Holmes Mine Rescue Association Annual Meeting and Training Seminar in Branson, MO, to honor the founding father of modern mine safety, Dr. Joseph A. Holmes. While serving as the first director of the Bureau of Mines (established in 1910), Dr. Holmes pioneered accident prevention, education and first aid training programs for mine worker safety. - MSHA Launches Enhanced Safety Standards
Enhanced enforcement of MSHA’s web-based “Rules to Live By” and exam rule calculators began July 1. MSHA reports that data collected will more accurately determine the numbers of citations and orders issued during the most recent inspection periods, and that results will enable mine operators to monitor their own compliance and eliminate violations. - Dept. of Interior Final Rule on Coal Valuation
Interior’s Office of Natural Resources has announced a final rule changing how it values coal, oil and natural gas for royalties, beginning January 1, 2017. The rulemaking process has taken more than five years and has been a source of controversy, with more than 1,000 pages of comments and petitions containing nearly 200,000 signatures.
