Scholarships  

Each year the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) offers up to 25 scholarships to SME student members for academic excellence.  

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS MUST:

  • Be an SME student member in good standing
  • Be majoring in a field related to the minerals industry
  • Be currently enrolled in their course of study
  • Have completed their sophomore year in college

Applications require the following attachments:

  1. Two letters of recommendation from university faculty, previous employers, or industry professionals.  We prefer that you attach the letters to your application, but if necessary, the authors may e-mail the letters directly to Tessa Baxter (baxter@smenet.org).
  2. Current transcript (official or unofficial).
  3. Signed FERPA waiver (generally available through your school’s registrar or online). 
    IMPORTANT NOTE: All SME Scholarships require that a completed FERPA waiver be uploaded along with your application.  Click HERE to download the required form.

It is the responsibility of the students to ensure their applications are complete and submitted by the close of business on October 25.  Late applications or attachments will not be accepted.

SCHOLARSHIPS INCLUDE:

Coal & Energy Division Scholarship Available to students majoring in mining or mineral engineering programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Students also must be engaged in coal-related activities. Approximately 15 scholarships are awarded each year. The amount of each award (approximately $2,500) is designated by the SME Coal & Energy Division Executive Committee.

Coal & Energy Division Research Scholarship The Coal & Energy Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is pleased to offer a $5,000 Undergraduate Research Scholarship in support of applied research on coal and energy topics. Any topic dealing with some segment of the coal or energy fields may be selected for the research. The research must contain a hands-on component, such as data collection from a site (for example, a coal mine, preparation plant, utility, methane extraction system, etc.) or experiments conducted on samples collected from site. Purely theoretical or simulation type of research, such as a paper based on a literature search are not the focus of this scholarship. The intent of this scholarship is to offer a funded opportunity to expose undergraduate students to the real world of the coal and energy industries, prior to the start of their professional career.

Environmental Division Scholarship The Environmental Division annually awards one or more scholarships to promising college students who desire to develop their skills related to mining and the environment. The total amount of the award (approximately $5,000) is apportioned to one or more students at the discretion of the Division. A Scholarship may be awarded to a student(s) who is a member of SME, attending a college or university of his or her choice that provides a curriculum leading to an undergraduate degree related to mining and the environment and a faculty advisor with special interests in an environmentally-oriented program.

Gerald V. Henderson Industrial Minerals & Aggregates Memorial Scholarship Available to students enrolled in a regular course of study leading to a degree in geology, minerals engineering, mining engineering, or mineral economics. Scholarship amounts vary as the annual scholarship fund of $2,000 is apportioned to one or more students at the discretion of the SME Industrial Minerals Division Executive Committee.

John S. Marshall Memorial Scholarship The John S. Marshall Memorial Scholarship (Marshall Scholarship) is awarded annually to one or more
undergraduate mining engineering students planning to pursue careers in the coal mining industry. A 2.75
cumulative grade point average is required. A desire for and probability of success in a career in coal mining will be important factors in selection of the successful candidate(s).

McIntosh Engineering Scholarship 

The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is awarded annually to promising undergraduate students entering their junior year of an accredited undergraduate degree program in Mining Engineering with a focus on underground mining.  The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is a renewable scholarship with total potential funding of $12,000 per student: $5,000 for junior year and, subject to renewal approval, an additional $7,000 for senior year.  Applicants must be completing their sophomore year in a regular course of study leading to a degree in Mining Engineering.  A 2.75 cumulative grade point average is required.  A desire for and probability of success in a career in Mining Engineering will be important factors in selection of the successful candidate.  Selection of scholarship recipients and approval of scholarship renewal is at the discretion of the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship Committee.

SME Mining & Exploration Division Scholarship Available to students currently enrolled as an undergraduate in an ABET accredited minerals-related program majoring in mining, geology, or other field of specialization covered by the M&E Division's technical unit committees. Up to four scholarship awards may be given at $1,500 each at the discretion of the SME Mining and Exploration Division Executive Committee.

Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division Richard Klimpel Scholarship The Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration offers up to six scholarships on an annual basis to students interested in pursuing careers in the area of mineral processing. The first place recipient receives the Richard Klimpel Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 plus expenses to the SME Annual Meeting; and up to five additional $1,000 scholarships may be awarded. The Division's MPD Scholarship Committee makes its decision based upon the nominations it receives from the minerals department of each institution.

MMSA/SMEF Presidential Scholarship The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration Foundation Presidential Scholarship offers one significant scholarship on an annual basis to an outstanding student whose study program encompasses any aspect of the extractive minerals industry. The SME Foundation supports all efforts to recruit talented students for the minerals industry. MMSA is dedicated to promoting and improving the understanding and appreciation of the role played by mining and metallurgy in the United States.

Eugene P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship

The Mining & Exploration Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration offers the Eugene P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 on an annual basis to students pursuing a career in mining engineering. Selection is made by the Mining & Exploration Scholarship Committee.

Steven C. Potter Scholarship and Galway Resources Internship

The Steven C. Potter Scholarship is to be awarded annually to a graduate student who is an SME student member, and whose thesis is directed toward furthering the understanding of ore deposit systems and their formation, geologic mapping and analysis of an ore deposit or mining district, or developing concepts or tools that may be used in the discovery of ore deposits.

In addition to the scholarship, Galway Resources will provide a three-month, paid internship for the scholarship recipient to allow the student an opportunity to interact with professionals and apply the exploration skills of a geologist. The timing of the internship should be during the summer holidays, but will be at a mutually agreed time. Acceptance of the internship is at the option of the student, and the internship may be discontinued in the event that Galway Resources does not continue as a corporate entity.

Syd S. Peng Ground Control in Mining Scholarship The primary objective of the Syd S. Peng Ground Control in Mining Scholarship is to promote the science of ground control. To promote the ground control engineering discipline, an undergraduate and/or graduate scholarship, or scholarships, will be awarded annually to encourage the development of ground control engineers.

RETC Executive Committee Scholarship

The Rapid Excavation & Tunneling Conference (RETC) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) annually awards one or more scholarships to promising college students who desire to develop their skills in the rapid excavation and tunneling field.  The amount of the scholarship (approximately $2,500) is awarded at the discretion of the RETC Executive Committee.

RETC Attendance Award Scholarship

The goals of the RETC Student Conference Scholarship Program are:

  • Provide students with skills and information for a career in the underground industry.
  • Provide educational and networking opportunities to future underground industry professionals.
  • Enhance the professional level of people in the underground industry.
  • Increase exposure of available career opportunities in the underground industry.

Henry DeWitt Smith Graduate Scholarship

The Henry DeWitt Smith Graduate Scholarship was established 1967 to assist worthy students in the pursuit of their graduate education in the Mining, Metallurgical, Materials, or Petroleum Departments of leading universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. In view of Henry DeWitt Smith's contributions to the mining industry, emphasis will be placed on awards to students focusing on the operations of mines. The scholarship consists of one or more Graduate Scholarship(s) offered annually. Number and amount of awards can vary from year to year. Each year’s allocation is determined by the Mining & Exploration Division’s Scholarship Committee upon receipt of a recommended guideline from the AIME Board of Trustees. The recipient of a scholarship shall receive, in addition to a check, a certificate and a brochure which sets forth the relationship of Henry DeWitt Smith to the mining industry (the latter two items to be presented by the department head at a suitable function with peer recognition).

UCA Scholarship The UCA of SME is pleased to announce a new scholarship – the UCA of SME Scholarship – that has been established to encourage the introduction of undergraduate and graduate academic pursuits and careers in the field of tunneling and underground construction and numerous associated disciplines involved in the development, planning, design, and construction of underground infrastructure.
Beginning in 2011, the UCA of SME Scholarship will be awarded annually to one or more promising college students who desire to develop their skills in tunneling and underground mining. Up to $10,000 in scholarships may be awarded each year. The recipient(s) will be announced each spring in anticipation of the next academic year, and the scholarship(s) will be presented at either the North American Tunneling or Rapid Excavation Tunnel Conference held in June of each year.

WAAIME Scholarship On an annual basis, the Women's Auxiliary to AIME (WAAIME) Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the earth sciences as related to the minerals field. Fields recognized by WAAIME may include mining, geological sciences, metallurgy, petroleum, mineral sciences, materials science and engineering, mining economics, chemical engineering, and other related studies. The number and amount of scholarships awarded yearly shall be dictated by the funds available and by the financial needs of the applicants.
