Anything but Boring: My Path to Tunneling

Speaker: Jack Lawrence
Jack Lawrence is an aspiring tunnel engineer and master's student in the GeoSystems engineering program at the University of California, Berkeley. With a heavy interest in data science and artificial intelligence, he one day hopes to work at the intersection of computation and tunneling. Jack has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he conducted extensive research in the field of underground construction. During his time at Illinois, he served as a co-author on several technical publications.

Beyond Tunnel Vision: Leveraging Machine Learning for Predictive Analysis of Tunnel Boring Machine Performance

Speaker: Shengfeng Huang
Shengfeng Huang is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. He specializes in geotechnical engineering, with emphasis on TBM performance prediction by leveraging different machine learning techniques. The overarching goal of his research is to develop a comprehensive model capable of forecasting tunnel performance across diverse projects. This model is designed to be both generalized and incremental, enabling it to predict potential risks. His involvement extends to the detailed analysis of probable hazards along the planned $12.3 billion Hudson tunnel project, conducted in collaboration with NJIT and MIT. Prior to joining Stevens, Shengfeng Huang earned a master’s degree from Fuzhou University, China, in 2021, as an outstanding graduate student. His academic contributions include several published journal papers covering topics within geotechnical engineering, such as slope stability, the impact of deep excavation on existing tunnels, and crack propagation in sandstone. Shengfeng Huang has received recognition as a recipient of the Met Section Geo-Institute Scholarship and UCA Young Members Conference Scholarships.
