Associate Editor (Magazine/Web/Journal)

PAY RANGE:

$50,000 - $65,000 DOE

BONUS:

8% bonus potential based upon achievement of defined goals

401(K):

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

An Associate/Web and Journal Editor produces content for web and print products including one monthly publication that covers the global mining industry, one quarterly publication covering the tunneling and underground construction industry, and a website that provides daily news about the mining industry to the Society’s members, and will also be responsible for content management and Editorial Board management for the Society’s peer-reviewed technical journal. The position will edit and write technical material and engage in content gathering, reporting, and feature-length writing. The position also includes collaboration with Marketing to promote the magazines and membership benefits.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Produces content for web and print products including one monthly publication and one quarterly publication and a website that provides daily news about the mining industry to the Society’s members.
  • Participates in editorial review, including vetting submissions, soliciting peer reviewers and some developmental editing.
  • Contributes to the web publishing process including updating associated web pages, generating and posting content and image preparation/formatting for CMS specs.
  • Collects top web articles to share in weekly e-newsletters and to share on social media.
  • Manages the content of peer-reviewed technical papers for the journal, and manages the Editorial Board.
  • Creates layouts and designs using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
  • Reviews drafts to ensure accurate and consistent spelling, grammar, format, clarity and overall cohesiveness.
  • Attends SME conferences to report on technical sessions, panel discussion and other events as assigned.
  • Assists meetings team with other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains professional correspondence with the publisher, editors, writers, and readers.
  • Supply content for social media to Marketing to promote the magazine.
  • Works with the team on projects with the goal of improving content quality, such as reformatting content or assessing content across topics.
  • Generates story ideas, writes content, and builds strong connections across business lines.
  • Develops a lineup for the news section, editing copy, and working with the art and production teams to create an engaging front of the book that draws readers into the magazine.
  • Maintains knowledge and understands the trends and changes in the industry.
  • Takes part in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces and working groups.
  • Write lead stories for eNews; human interest.  One article per Biweekly eNews for SME and Quarterly for UCA.
  • Research and write features for the magazine as assigned.
  • Work with Web Development on formatting, post monthly issues on the site, post photos, post daily news on ME site – source through Reuters, Bloomberg, Associated Press, etc. re-write it for SME and post.  Submit a ticket to Web Development.  Review SME web page to ensure it is current. 
  • Travels to industry events to stay on top of the latest industry trends and report on them for the magazine.
  • Participates in and contributes to the editorial advisory committee.
  • Contributes to special projects and big ideas for the brand.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expert skills in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
  • Skilled at generating content for web and print products
  • Knowledge of WordPress or other web publishing tools
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with professionals at all levels and collaborate across business lines
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and efficiency while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Detail-oriented



Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or English
  • 5 years of journalism experience
  • 3 year of Web publishing experience
  • 1 year of Design/layout experience
  • Knowledge of Associated Press Style
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Mining industry knowledge a plus


Travel

Travel may be required for SME’s Annual Conference and other events.
