PAY RANGE:

$80,000 - $95,000 DOE

BONUS:

10% bonus potential based upon achievement of defined goals

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

Responsible for the acquisition, development, publishing (editorial, production, and manufacturing), profitability, and effectiveness of SME’s book publishing program. Monitors trends in the industry and curates books that appeal to the varied markets SME supports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads the development and implementation of a comprehensive book publishing strategy, managing the production of 3 to 6 books annually.
  • Manages the publication of proceedings for 3 to 5 conferences annually.
  • Works with authors to make sure the substance of each manuscript is tight and engaging, that key messages are honed and highlighted, and that technical information is clear and relevant.
  • Maintains an exceptional high level of quality and accuracy in every book.
  • Collaborates with world-class experts in the mining and underground construction industries to motivate them, keep them on deadline, and help them develop meaningful books.
  • Uses excellent writing and editing skills to help authors express their ideas clearly, concisely, and creatively, and help design a suitable narrative for their work.
  • Responsible for the coordination and administration of the entire publication process for books, including sourcing and managing relationships with external vendors (technical editors, permissions editors, indexers, designers, compositors, proofreaders, translators, and printers/book manufacturers).
  • Manages approximately 8–10 contractors (editors, designers, etc.).
  • Establishes relationships with potential new sales partners at trade fairs and partner organizations.
  • Responsible for the SME Bookstore at SME conferences as well as partner events: identifies the inventory needed; partners with Marketing on collateral materials; oversees onsite setup, sales, and breakdown.
  • Manages the books budget, P&Ls, and finances; meets established revenue goals.
  • Completes and distributes regular reports to keep managers and other departments up to date on the status of various projects.
  • Identifies new and innovative digital offerings.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, efficiently, and on time.
  • Collaborates with the Web Development and Marketing Team on effective promotion for new book releases.
  • Independently organizes, prioritizes, and manages workflow.
  • Manages all book publishing operations such as inventory, reprints, and revisions.
  • Maintains a commercial awareness of the technical book market.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • College degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of managing a book program with a technical society or association
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills

Preferred Education and Experience

  • First rate writing and editing skills, familiar with Chicago Manual of Style and the ACS Style Guide
  • Familiarity with design software (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Experience working on scientific and technical content

Travel

5-10%. Travel to SME Conferences and Partner Events.
