SME members include engineers, geologists, metallurgists, educators, students, and researchers focused on innovations in mining engineering. SME nurtures a professional community, develops technical content, and provides networking and educational opportunities for the mining industry. In addition to the SME organization, SME also has a 501(c)(3) Foundation (SMEF) that secures funds to advance key initiatives for the mining community.

  • Pay Range: $47,000 - $55,000 DOE
  • Bonus: 8% bonus potential based on achievement of defined goals
  • 401(K): 3% automatic safe-harbor match plus 80% elective deferral match of the first 5% contributed by the employee

Summary

The Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) is the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Foundation’s (SMEF) designated program to develop and deliver accurate and suitable K-12 education materials and activities and conduct public awareness outreach about mining and minerals. The MEC was created with the vision of generating an enlightened and supportive public that appreciates the importance of mining and minerals to their lives and their lifestyles.

Several distinct, yet equally important groups, are the targeted audiences for the activities of the MEC, specifically: 1) K-12 students who are the consumers of the future and potential employees of the mining industry; 2) teachers of K-12 students who will provide the knowledge and skills needed to provide factual and meaningful instruction and experiences for youth; 3) SME members throughout the nation who locally provide accurate and significant educational activities for K-12 students and the general public; and, 4) the general public who are the beneficiaries of mining and minerals in their daily lives.


Essential Functions

  • Project manages all MEC activities and events.
  • Identifies, plans, organizes, and represents MEC at local, regional and national conferences (travel 4 weeks a year, at a minimum).
  • Recruits and manage volunteers for outreach efforts, Committees, and potentially Division support. Volunteer Management includes helping groups move forward on projects, bringing ideas back to SME for consideration, hosting meetings, taking meeting minutes, etc.
  • Supports existing partnerships and start new partnerships with mining companies, geoscience, educational and other organizations to promote the importance of mining and minerals to everyday life.
  • Presents information on MEC to internal and external audiences, one-on-one and to large groups.
  • Promotes MEC through internal and external communications (MEC social media, eNews, Mining Engineering magazine, press releases, MEC and SME websites, etc.).
  • Partners with the MEC Curriculum Coordinator to project manage and successfully implement the Move Mining and Move Mining Next Gen competitions.
  • Supports the MEC Committee, along with the MEC Curriculum Coordinator.
  • Collaborates with Meetings, Web Development, Marketing, IT, and other stakeholders to execute successful events and address emerging priorities.
  • Collaborates with educators, like-minded geoscience organizations, professionals in the mining, metallurgy and exploration industries, and the general public
  • Coordinates MEC outreach activities with other applicable SME departments (Sections, Student Chapters, Young Leaders, etc.).
  • Conducts SME Outreach Resources conference calls.


Other Job Functions

  • Plans and reports budgets for outreach activities.
  • Ensures website accuracy with updated information and secure resource links.
  • Manages new and existing content on the MEC website.
  • Provides outreach resources to SME members.
  • Elicit participation in SME Outreach Resources Community group.
  • Reports on MEC outreach activities, inventory and sales, as requested.
  • Partners with marketing to create materials including emails, articles, and flyers.
  • Creates and maintains lists of teachers, volunteers and other MEC contacts.


Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, earth science, communications, instructional technology or mining-related major.
  • 2 years of related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to build rapport with volunteer committee members.


Travel

5% travel to SME Conferences and MEC Events
